It is our pleasure to welcome Tanna Farms guest blogger, Gillian Lewis.
Gillian is a Vanuatu based Naturopath and owner/operator of ‘Reflections Retreat‘ which is located in stunning Havannah Harbour, just 20 minutes drive from Port Vila. Gillian is a big Tanna Farms fan (which we love) and we were delighted when she said she’d like to join us as a guest blogger.
There are so many uses for Coconut Oil including oral health! Over to Gillian to fill us in on all the nutty details…
As a Naturopath, I use natural products as part of my practice as much as possible. One of my favourite products is Tanna Farms coconut oil. We use it extensively at Reflections Retreat for cooking, as a massage oil and as the base for several different medicines.
One of my favourite uses for the coconut oil is as part of oral health care. Coconut contains Lauric Acid and has been proven to be antimicrobial; and can kill bacteria, virus and fungi. This makes it perfect for improving the health of teeth and gums.
Coconut Oil makes a great natural toothpaste that is cheap and effective.
1 tbsp. of Tanna Farms coconut oil
1 tbsp. of bicarbonate soda
1 tsp of turmeric (optional, for those that can stand the mess it makes)
3 – 5 drops of essential oil, either peppermint, lemon or cinnamon (the oil is optional but it does make the toothpaste taste great). Make sure that the essential oil you use is suitable for ingestion.
The toothpaste stores well for a month or so in a jar.
When I make my own toothpaste I prefer to use cinnamon oil and turmeric; however, when I am making toothpaste for guests I tend to leave out the turmeric and stick to lemon or peppermint oil instead.
Another great use I have for coconut oil is oil pulling. Oil pulling is a great way to improve the overall health of your mouth. Oil pulling with coconut oil helps to reduce plaque and bacteria in the mouth; which in turn helps reduce bad breath as well as the incidence of gingivitis (gum disease) and cavities.
Oil pulling is easy to do, simply:
1. Place one tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth.
2. Swish the oil around your mouth for 15 – 20 minutes.
3. Spit the oil out, either onto the grass or into the toilet; don’t use the sink as the oil may clog it.
4. Rinse your mouth clean with water and if possible brush your teeth.
I recommend oil pulling at least once a day, more if you have teeth or gum problems. If you can’t manage once a day then try for three times a week. If you want to know more, there is lots of information available online about oil pulling and its health benefits.
I have experienced the power of oil pulling first hand, in 2016 one of my clients had a gum infection that would not resolve, even after several courses of antibiotics. I asked the client to commit to oil pulling three times a day for one month. At the end of that period, the infection had completely resolved and
the gum was healthy. I now recommend oil pulling to anyone with gum or teeth problems.
